The Philadelphia Retina Endowment Fund (PREF) was established in 1984 as a non-profit medical research organization in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is located within Wills Eye Hospital, which commenced operation in 1832, and is overseen by the Board of City Trusts, (Ronald R. Donatucci, Chairman).
One of the recent areas of research interest in the laboratory is focused on the potential treatment of some forms of inherited retinal degenerations such as retinitis pigmentoasa. A new and developing form of thearpy named Trans Corneal Electrical Stimulation, or TES, is being developed by Jay L. Federman, MD. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of PREF. This form of treatment was a recent topic within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for potential application in treatment.
